Slide numbered tiles on a 4x4 grid and merge matching numbers to reach the 2048 tile. Simple to learn and very hard to put down.
2048 is created by Gabriele Cirulli, based on 1024 by Veewo Studio and conceptually similar to Threes by Asher Vollmer. You slide numbered tiles around a four by four grid with the arrow keys; when two tiles with the same number touch, they merge into one with double the value. Every move adds a new tile, so the board fills up quickly unless you plan ahead. The goal is to build a 2048 tile, though you can keep going for higher scores afterwards. The rules take seconds to learn and the game is hard to put down. This copy runs in any modern browser with no install, and your best score is saved locally. The game code is unchanged from the official repository apart from removing one App Store link. 2048 is released under the MIT License.
