Freeciv is developed by the Freeciv project and its contributors. It is a classic turn-based 4X strategy game: you found cities, explore the map, research technologies, build armies and wonders, and guide a civilisation from the stone age to the space age. You can win by conquest or by launching a spaceship. Freeciv supports single-player games against AI rivals, hot-seat play and online multiplayer, and it ships with several rulesets and a map editor. The interface feels dated next to modern commercial 4X games, but the strategy is deep and there is a lot of content.
